Understanding Copyright and Fair Use in an Academic Health Sciences Context Online

This class is designed to educate JHU faculty and students on the basics of copyright law and fair use as they apply in both research and classroom settings. Students will achieve the following learning objectives:

  1. Identify and describe the ins and the outs of the USA’s Copyright Act as it applies to their respective research and classroom settings (e.g., selecting and posting teaching materials, understanding author rights etc.).
  2. Define and determine when a work is in the Public Domain.
  3. Assess whether a work falls within the scope of fair use, and weigh the four factors of fair use to determine if it qualifies.
  4. Identify various copyright exemptions, understand when and how to obtain copyright permissions, and learn what copyright infringement entails and how to manage it.
  5. Distinguish plagiarism from copyright infringement and understand how to avoid plagiarism in their work

Through active learning techniques and interactive concept checks integrated throughout the curriculum, students will be able to assess their understanding of the content.
